The NMJ Islamic Centre in Durban was abuzz with activity last Thursday – 19th June 2014, as the Islamic Medical Association Durban Branch together with several other local sister organizations hosted approximately 500 elderly members of the community.
Sean Overall Hearing Systems along with Sabera Asmal and the Nursing Sisters from the IMA and Sydenham Clinics joined us in helping to provide free hearing, eye, sugar and pressure tests. The Durban MSA Medicine and Optometry students assisted them. An interactive and lighthearted programme then followed. Speakers included Moulana Mohamed Chohan, Professor Bilkish Cassim, Shamim Khan, Sister Honey Allee and Mrs Zuleika Mayat who discussed issues regarding old age, health and wellbeing.
Sr Honey Allee said that one of the key features amongst the elders was the lack of companionship. Several organisations have volunteered their services in providing companionship. A cursory look at the needs assessment questionnaire that was filled in by the elderly gives the impression that they would appreciate help in various forms.
A delicious lunch was then served and each person went home with a goodie bag. The Islamic Medical Association would like to thank all those who were involved in making the day a success.
