Training

We keep Sister Fathima Dire’s (Health Facilitator) skills at peak by giving her training at the IMASA Offices. In January 2013 we have conducted an indoor workshop on the ‘mental needs of vulnerable families’ with the MAP staff, Brother Musa Gula and Sheikh Isa Ntuli. With this we can go further, in enlarging our outreach areas. Sister Zahira Jones (IMASA Klerksdorp Secretary) as facilitator conducted the workshop with the MAP staff, as well as with Sister Fathima Dire who conduct the door to door campaigns. This kind of workshops will continue with the Care Givers of Matlosana.

Support Group for HIV Positive Infected Mothers & Children

Our support group programmes include psycho-social counselling , care and support of people living with HIV/AIDS as well as victim empowerment for abused women and children. These support group programmes are done on a weekly basis at the Hospice Iqraa Centre in Alabama by Sister Zahira Jones (Secretary of IMASA Klerksdorp Branch). We do coordinating skills activities like hand and eye coordinating activities, educational activities: like coloring, painting etc. with the small children, as they are not attending school. The support group helps the individuals feel safe, supported, and understood; in addition we supply them with information and skills to help them cope. As from day one this group has been very cooperative, but they have some emotional stigma they carry with them daily due to their infection with HIV. However outwardly they seem to be smiling and be content, but the individual counselling brings out some sad depths within these individuals.

Support Group at the Renal Dialysis Unit

Support Group at the Renal Dialysis Unit/Dialysis at Klerksdorp Hospital

IMASA Klerksdorp Branch has initiated a support group with the Renal Dialysis patients at Klerksdorp Hospital. Our first session started on the 4th of February 2013. There are about 15-60 patients that come once a month for their Renal Dialysis. We as IMASA Klerksdorp have thought it well; that these patients undergo a lot of challenges in receiving this treatment, and their psychological needs, need to be met too. Some of these patients are already waiting for a donor for 8 years. The many years of Dialysis has weakened their resolve and leave them with negativity and in a depressing state. Inculcating some dawah to uplift their spiritual needs may work tremendously with them within. Been tried today and it seems as if their spiritual needs strongly needs the hand of The Almighty.

Dawah and Health Education Project

Dawah and Health Education Project in Association with Sautul Islam Centre in Jouberton (Brother Sheikh Dawood Mustupha)

The programmes are based on the importance of:

>     Education in schools, gaining educational information and the importance thereof.

>     Motivation and education was given regarding abstinence, HIV/AIDS, other illnesses that may cause a setback, etc.

>     A Dawah programme was conducted in between, on how to remain on the straight path, getting there, keeping oneself in good behaviour and perceiving the peace in this act.

The issues we face with daily are that our human dignity is decreasing; so many challenges out there and temptations make us scar our dignity ourselves. That is why this leadership programmes on a Friday is very important in order to educate these brothers and sisters to lead by example.

Please note this Institute mainly has reverts coming on Friday’s for their weekly prayer where after the prayer the programmes were conducted. In the week some teenagers come for dawah, health education and psycho social support lectures. IMASA Klerksdorp provides the Nutritional Support for these lectures as the attendees are all from rural backgrounds and are not often having a supplemental meal.

Our programmes on Friday continue as follows:

Ladies:

>     Revert Support Group with ladies.

>     Teaching the revert ladies the basics and necessities as a Muslim.

>     Sandwich distribution (as the attendees are all from rural backgrounds).

>     Dawah educational information.

>     Hygiene awareness and strong emphasis on ‘HYGIENE IN ISLAM’.

Males:

>     Islamic Ethos lectures.

>     Revert Support Group.

>     Dawah educational information.

>     Sandwich distribution (as the attendees are all from rural backgrounds).

>     Dawah educational information.

>     Hygiene awareness and strong emphasis on ‘HYGIENE IN ISLAM’.

>     Upholding the reverts to Islamic principles.

Ladies Programmes Have Also Been Initiated

Revert Sisters has attended the progamme on a Friday afternoon after Jumah Prayer.

Door to Door Visits to Vulnerable & Needy Families

Door to door campaigns are always worth doing even if we are inexperienced. It may be that someone is more willing to open their doors for a slightly lost-looking young person who knocks on their door than for a completely anonymous individual displayed on a leaflet left in their postbox.

It is one of the most time-consuming ways of conducting a door to door campaign, but it is also one of the most effective. If we come to somebody’s home, there is a much greater chance that he or she will remember us. In this affective way, we can reach out them via dawah, counseling, assistance with social grants as well as helping them to develop skills into bringing a ‘entrepreneur ‘ side out in them so they can survive with the means they have. As we have mentioned before, in extension 24 there is a population of approximately 5000.

The problems associated with direct contact include recipient’s reactions that interfere with our message and ‘recipients’ subjective feelings that are at odds with our intentions.

Door to door visits with caregiver and IMA volunteer extension 24 Jouberton (Klerksdorp) as well as Kanana (Orkney).

Our door to door activities in Jouberton Extension 24 continues as normal. Households are visited on a door to door basis and counseling, inspiration (motivation), dawah and Health Education as well as Home Based Care are being done. Sister Fathima Dire our volunteer conducts these door to door campaigns on a daily basis.

We have continued with the Soup Kitchen in July and August. This will be our last Soup Kitchen for the winter, as the summer months are approaching.
