The ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA [IMASA] has established a Renal Dialysis Unit. The unit was established because the dialysis within the public sector was and is still facing a tremendous backlog and private facilities are far too costly for patients without medical aid. Due to the limited resources, state hospitals only provide dialysis to a restricted number of patients who fulfill a certain strict criteria. A large number of patients are turned away, and some of them remain untreated and die within 3-6 months.
The IMASA Renal Unit has been in operation since November 2007 and has proven to be very successful. The unit provides renal dialysis to those individuals that do not qualify for the state treatment.
A unique part of the project is that the patient is simultaneously sponsored to join a medical aid. The execution period is a year for pre-existing conditions thereafter the medical aid pays for the dialysis and the patient makes way for another patient to join into the programme.
