The Optometry Session co-ordinated by Optometrist Yasiera Mahomed, featured 2 oral presentations. Professor Kovin Naidoo, the Global Head of Advocacy and partnerships at the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation spoke about what it will take to reverse the trend of Myopia. Current global statistics highlighting the seriousness of the condition were presented. The presentation examined the problem, the strategies that need to be adopted to reverse the trend as well as the opportunities for practitioners. The second presentation by Dr Naimah Ebrahim Khan, the Academic Leader at UKZN Optometry, discussed evidence based practice. Practical everyday examples of how optometrists can incorporate evidence based practice into their patient management was presented. The session closed off with an interactive focus group discussion regarding Optometry practice in South Africa.
