The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa congratulates new medical and Health Science Students on the completion of their respective degrees and diplomas. At the end of each year a function is held to welcome these newly qualified professionals to the health profession. The graduates then become members of the IMASA and render their voluntary services when called upon. The graduation function is attended by all Muslim medical and health science graduates. Each graduation dinner is hosted by the respective IMA branches across the country.
The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA] honoured new medical and health science graduates at dinners held across the country. The event is held each year to officially welcome Muslim graduates to the health fraternity. It also gives IMASA an opportunity to introduce graduates to the work done in the non-profit sector.
The IMA Durban Branch held its Graduation Dinner on 29 November 2013. A total of 570 people attended of which 79 students were honoured. It was a fund raising event with Prof Sabiha Essack, Head of the Dept of Pharmacy at UKZN Westville Campus, being the guest speaker. She gave a motivational talk on education, career and contributions to humanity.
The IMA Western Cape successfully hosted 400 delegates on Wednesday, 27th November 2013 at Islamia College Hall in Lansdowne. They welcomed to the healthcare fraternity new dentists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, a natural medicine practitioner, pharmacists, doctors, as undergraduates with a total of 60 delegates from University of Western Cape, University of Cape Town, College of Nursing and Stellenbosch University attended. The evening was opened by Hafeez Umer Agherdien and the MC provided the audience with an overview of IMA activities and projects. Graduates were honoured in their various groups with our respected elders, Prof Mohamed Coovadia and Dr Fahmi Williams congratulating them individually.
The Tshwane graduation was held on the 29th Nov 2013 @ Al Ghazali Sports Centre in Erasmia, around100 guests attended the event. Qiraat was given by Hafez Naem Jeebhay and the guest speaker of the evening was the President of IMASA; Dr Shoyab Wadee. Lifetime awards were given to Dr Bashir Hassan-Mia, Dr Ahmed Moosa, Dr Satar Aboobaker, Dr Suliman Carim, late Dr Sabadia
The Johannesburg Branch graduation hosted 90 graduates in total and ±320 guests attended the annual graduation at Image Lifestyle Conference and Wedding Venue in Johannesburg. Dr Imtiaz Sooliman was the honoured guest speaker and offered jewels of advice with regards to the selfless sacrifices of all health professionals. The MC was Mr Ashraf Garda and an honorary award was presented to a very dedicated member of IMASA; Dr M.I.A.H Rawat. This year, the Johannesburg branch decided to host a lunch (instead of a dinner) event and this change was received favourably by attendees. The branch also held a small medical exhibition, as a means of raising funds, as well as an opportunity for our members and the community to show-case their products.
The excitement at the functions was infectious as graduates met and congratulated each other. Each student was honoured. Lifetime awards were given and positive feedback was received by all that attended. We sincerely hope that these graduates will become active members of IMASA Inshaa Allah.
